Discussion – How I Choose My Next Read

Hello everyone,

The regular task of choosing which books to read next only seems to be getting more difficult. With ever-lengthening TBR lists and a plethora of highly anticipated new releases to contend with along the way, it can sometimes feel like a constant dilemma!

Even though I hardly ever read ARCs, I have realised that I am beginning to take a lot of different things into consideration when deciding on my next read, and it would be interesting to find out if you do things in a similar way!

So, here are the things that I think about when choosing my upcoming TBR:

Genre

One of my main reading goals for 2019 is to read a wider variety of genres more often,.so I am trying not to  select too many books in succession that fall under the same genre, unless they are part of a series.

I feel like this will help me avoid falling into a reading slump, as sometimes after reading a lot of the same genre, some of the tropes and plot devices can begin to feel slightly repetitive.

Most Anticipated Reads

When I look through my TBR and start deciding on my next read, I naturally gravitate towards the books I look forward to reading the most, or have received lots of positive reviews.

This includes new releases. When a book from one of my favourite authors is about to be released, it often goes straight to the top of my TBR. I pre-order it and once it arrives, it does not take me long to make a start!

How Long I Have Owned The Book

When I buy a physical book, I usually try and read it in fairly good time, so no more than a few months. As such, there are not all that many books I own that I still haven’t read.

Most of these unread books form part of the large pile that sits beside my bed, although I also have a number of library books. I frequently borrow books from the library, so the length of time I have had them often comes into consideration when I choose what to read next.

Format

I enjoy reading physical books and e-books, so for that reason I like to alternate between the two formats. My Kindle and the lower prices on offer to purchase books make it an ideal platform to read some of the books right up towards the top of my TBR.

I would still estimate that physical books account for about two thirds of my reading, and my love of paperbacks means that I could never solely read electronically.

Those are the four main things that come to mind when I choose my next read, although other thinks such as page count can sometimes come into it, particularly with my Goodreads target in mind!
