Top Kindle Highlights Of 2019 – Part One

Hello everyone,

As we edge ever closer to Christmas, today I would like to share some of my favourite quotes that I came across in the books I have read on my Kindle in 2019. Just like last year, I am splitting this into two posts to do justice to some of the brilliantly written passages I have happened upon.

I mostly read physical books. Indeed for every e-book I read there are at least three physical books. However, one of the great things about a Kindle is the ability to highlight passages and make notes. They are also saved on Goodreads, which is even better!

When I read books, I love exploring the writing style and finding interesting, insightful, or inspirational lines. This first part is made up almost exclusively of quotes from the last two books of the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden, which were so full of meaning that I made so many highlights.

You cannot take vengeance on a whole people because of the doings of a few wicked men.

The Girl In The Tower

Vasya’s stare turned to outright delight, for in this square was a market, the first she had ever seen.

The Girl In The Tower

Things made by effort are more real than things made by wishing.

The Girl In The Tower

If you want something, it means you do not have it, it means that you do not believe it is there, which means it will never be there. The fire is or it is not. That which you call magic is simply not allowing the world to be other than as you will it.

The Girl In The Tower

Truths are like flowers, better plucked at the right moment.

The Girl In The Tower

Every time you take one path, you must live with the memory of the other: of a life left not chosen. Decide as seems best, one course or the other; each way will have its bitter with its sweet.

The Girl In The Tower

There is no magic. Things are. Or they are not.

The Girl In The Tower

You know, as you grow up, you stop being sure of your memories – what was real, what you’ve imagined.

Attend by West Camel

Was that what Deborah meant by ‘I can’t die’. She was able to – of course she was – but if no one knew she lived, if no tears would be shed for her – could she be said to have died?

Attend by West Camel

A swath of black gashed the heart of the city, as though the hand of God had fallen in the night, dripping fire from its nails.

The Winter Of The Witch

There are no monsters in the world, and no saints. Only infinite shades woven into the same tapestry, light and dark. One man’s monster is another man’s beloved. The wise know that.

The Winter Of The Witch

Vasya did not want to think about her wounds; she did not want to have flesh at all. Just below the surface of her mind lurked the most howling grief; the memory of death, of violation. She did not want to see those memories inscribed on her skin.

The Winter Of The Witch

If I wanted to imprison someone until the end of days, would it not be best to use a prison that he has no desire to escape?

The Winter Of The Witch

If you spend all your days bearing the burden of unforgotten wrongs you will only wound yourself.

The Winter Of The Witch

There were no locks in a nightmare. This was a dream; she could do what she liked.
