Contradictions Book Tag

Hello everyone,

I hope you are having a lovely week. The daylight hours are gradually increasing again here, so that is a sure-fire way to improve my mood! In light of that, I am very excited to be sharing my tag post for March.

This is a tag I found on Kristin’s blog just the other day. She works so hard, filming everything for Booktube and then publishing a corresponding post on her blog – do consider following her on both platforms! Anyway, it looked like fun to have a go myself. It was originally created by Daniela at Only If For a Page, on BookTube.

I love this genre but I didn’t like this book

These are two of the most recent books I read that did not live up to my expectations, both of which I finished in December. I absolutely adore historical mysteries, but Dangerous Women lacked character development as well as suspense. I also like a good mystery/thriller, however The Plot fell a little bit flat after showing some initial promise.

I rarely read this genre but I loved this book

I rarely read middle grade or children’s books anymore – two or three in a year if I am lucky, so I am very grateful indeed to have read Amari And The Night Brothers, which is an absolute joy for imagination, entertainment, and empowerment. Rebecca is a book that I count as a classic, and I have not read nearly enough of them. I read it last year and it enjoyed it so much that I now have a beautiful Folio Society edition.

I love this trope but I didn’t like this book

I am not really one for tropes, so I shall focus my answer more on a particular concept. On paper, the concept of VOX looked like something that would really appeal to me, with its feminist dystopian themes. However, I disliked both the writing style and the main character, so it turned out to be a disappointment.

I hate this trope but I loved this book

I cannot stand insta-love, and you will be hard-pressed to find a book that I like which contains it. However, this book, which I read for a blog tour in 2019, does it in a paranormal way that makes it feel enchanting and almost genuine. As such, I was invested in the story throughout.

I love this author but I didn’t like this book

Lisa Jewell is one of my favourite authors and everything she writes is now a must-read. Of the seven books I have read from her, this is the only real disappointment. The story never really connected with me and the twist at the end was rather predictable.

I previously disliked a book by this author but I loved this book

I would not go as far as to say that I disliked Michael J. Malone’s previous book In The Absence Of Miracles, but it left me with mixed feelings despite the impressive way it dealt with a hard-hitting subject matter. However, I was invited to take part in the blog tour for A Song Of Isolation, and it turned out to be a fantastic and extremely impactful read that evoked some strong feelings from me.

I love this cover but I didn’t like this book

I liked all of Sanjida Kay’s previous books, but despite its idyllic cover the story was not as thrilling as I hoped. As for the other two here, they improved as they went on but both had overly elaborate writing styles which distracted too much from the plot.

I don’t like this cover but I loved this book

My issues with these covers centre more around the colour schemes than the images they depict. The cover of Changeling just looks plain and boring, but it is an absolute knockout of a book! As for Give Me The Child, the magenta font and label just looks too garish against the image of the child at the top of the staircase, but it turned out to be quite a gripping thriller.
