Hello everyone,
Time for my latest A-Z post, featuring all the significant things about the books I read between the start of 2018 and the end of 2022. This one is all about the letter ‘E’, which is a particularly popular one for character names.
Let’s get straight on with it!

e-book
Digital copies of books which I read on my Kindle, or very occasionally, my mobile phone. I began reading e-books in 2017 and I like them a lot, although physical books will always be preferred!
Echo Ridge
The setting for Two Can Keep A Secret by Karen M. McManus, a place still haunted by the death of a teenage girl five years earlier. When the main characters arrive, another girl goes missing.
Eddie
I have read about three characters called Eddie. The most notable is Eddie Flynn, the unorthodox but brilliant defence barrister in Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh, which is part of a series.
The others are a member of the band in Daisy Jones And The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and a boy who senses a mysterious presence in Girl In The Walls by A.J. Gnuse.
Edie
The title character of Watching Edie by Camilla Way. Edie is overwhelmed by her pregnancy and becoming a single mother, but as the title implies, someone is watching over her.

Edith Rigby
A suffragette who was the subject of a biography by my bookish friend Beverley Adams, which I read and spotlighted back in 2021. I was very proud to receive a free copy.
Educated
A remarkable autobiography by Tara Westover, about the bizarre life she experienced with her parents. I listened to this on audiobook in 2021.
Edward King
A senator with views not all that dissimilar to those of Donald Trump, who is interested in becoming president in the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson. Main character Stevie Bell rightfully hates him, but her parents work for him.
Edward Lawrence
An aspiring antiquarian in Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman, who helps Dora research the pithos in her basement with the aim of gaining acceptance to the antiquarian society.
Effy
A young witch who recruits main character Anna Everdell into a secret coven at their school in Threadneedle by Cari Thomas. Effy is rather wayward and rebellious, but has a friendly side too.
Eilis Lacey
The main character in Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, who moves to New York and falls in love, but when she returns to her native Ireland she also has a suitor.

Elektra
The title character of an eponymous book by Jennifer Saint, which I read in 2022. She is the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, and she harbours bitter resentment towards her mother.
Element Walker
A pupil at Ellingham Academy in Truly Devious. She is creative and often plays her saxophone, but goes missing in mysterious circumstances.
Eliana Hughes
The main character in Apple Of My Eye by Claire Allan. When a mysterious letter arrives, she begins to doubt everything in her life.
Elise
The name of the girl who wanders the house without anybody knowing in Girl In The Walls. Also, Elise is the name of Rose’s missing mother in The Confession by Jessie Burton.
Eliza Fanning
A 12-year-old girl who visits Nora’s apothecary in The Lost Apothecary to purchase a poisonous concoction. She then returns and becomes a kind of assistant to Nora.
Elizabeth Acevedo
One of my favourite authors! I have loved all three of her books so far, two of which are written in verse and are each powerful in their own way. After a long wait, her next book is finally coming soon!
Elizabeth Best
A former spy and now resident of Cooper’s Chase in the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman. An eternally memorable character who always has a trick up her sleeve.
Elizabeth Lee
The author of Cunning Women, a story about a family suspected of witchcraft, which I read at the end of 2022.
Elizabeth Macneal
The author of two books which I have read. Her debut The Doll Factory was published in 2019 and that same year I saw her at a literary festival. Last year I read her second book, Circus Of Wonders.

Ella Black
The title character in The Truth And Lies Of Ella Black by Emily Barr. Set in Brazil, she is pursued by her real mother and falls in love with a guy just by staring at him.
Ella Longfield
A witness who feels guilty about a girl’s disappearance, after overhearing a conversation on a train in I Am Watching You by Theresa Driscoll.

Ellery
One of the main characters in Two Can Keep A Secret, who arrives at Echo Ridge and puts her love of solving crimes to the test.
Ellie
There are two characters I remember reading who are called Ellie. Firstly, there is the girl who is abducted in Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell, and also a world weary police officer in The Last To Know by Jo Furniss.
Ellingham Academy
The primary setting for the Truly Devious series. Situated near Burlington, Vermont and opened by billionaire Albert Ellingham, it is a school for some of the best young minds in the United States. All the houses are named after Greek and Roman deities.
Elliott Ward
The father of Pippa’s best friend Cara in A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson. He is a teacher at their school.
Elly Griffiths
The author of a number of mystery novels, although I have only read one. That was The Stranger Diaries, the first in a series featuring D.S. Harbinder Kaur.
Elsie
I have read about two characters called Elsie, too. The first is Amari’s best friend at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs in Amari And The Night Brothers by B.B. Alston. The other is Elsie Bainbridge, the main character in The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. Otherwise, you could hardly find more contrasting books than these two!
Emily Barr
The author of three young adult books I have read. The first – and my favourite of them so far – was The One Memory Of Flora Banks. That has been followed by The Truth And Lies Of Ella Black, and Things To Do Before The End Of The World. In case you could not tell, she likes long titles.
Emma
A very common name, and particularly in thrillers as it turns out! I have read about characters called Emma in Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, Circle Of Doubt by Tracy Buchanan, and My Mother’s Secret by Sanjida Kay.

Emmett Farmer
The main character in The Binding by Bridget Collins, a young man who goes to work with an elderly binder. He seems a bit lost to begin with, and the reasons become clear later on.
Emmy Willick
The main character in Julia Nobel’s The Mystery Of Black Hollow Lane middle grade series, who attends a school in England and is intrigued by a secret society and her elusive father.
Emoni
One of my favourite main characters of all time. She appears in With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo and is a teenage single mother who lives with her grandmother. She finds a love of cooking and a real sense of purpose.

The End Of Her
A thriller by Shari Lapena, which I was really enjoying for the most part but was then ruined by what I thought was a nonsensical ending…
Enora Byrnes
The main character in After The Green Withered by Kristin Ward, which was the first blog tour I took part in with The Write Reads. She finds herself in a dystopian world where water is a currency.
Enrique Mercado-Lopez
The rather adorable historian in the Gilded Wolves trilogy by Roshani Chokshi. Extremely fond of his subject, he uses his expertise to help Severin and House Vanth acquire Forged items.
Epilogue
A section which appears at the end of some books, which often contain a final twist or a scene taking place weeks, months, or even years after the last chapter.
Ergarth
One of the most atmospheric settings I have ever read. It is the location for Beast by Matt Wesolowski, where journalist Scott King investigates the gruesome death of a young vlogger. The descriptions are so lifelike that you feel as though you are there with Scott. It is eerie, and what is more, Ergarth is said to be haunted by a vampire.
Erica Somer
A police constable who gets promoted to the role of a detective after her impressive work in the DI Adam Fawley series by Cara Hunter. Later, she starts a relationship with a detective from another police force.

The Escape
One of five books I have read by thriller author C.L. Taylor, and this one was my favourite. It is a very tense one where the main character sees her credibility called into question and harassed by a woman, so she escapes with her child to Ireland.
Esme
The main character in The Dictionary Of Lost Words by Pip Williams, who works with her father, a lexicographer helping to compile the Oxford English Dictionary. She puts together a dictionary of other words deemed inappropriate to be included, in a book that acts as a coming of age story and documents her life.

Esme Lennox
The title character in The Vanishing Act Of Esme Lennox by Maggie O’Farrell, which I actually read in October 2021 as part of a research study about reading habits. A woman who spends most of her life in a secure hospital, she is a fascinating character.
Estelle
A lifestyle blogger who returns to her hometown after receiving a note with an image of a missing girl, claiming to know all her darkest secrets – in Her Last Breath by Tracy Buchanan.

Eva Björg Ægisdóttir
The only Icelandic author I have read, and I enjoyed her super atmospheric crime novel The Creak On The Stairs, which I read as part of a blog tour in 2020.
Evan Parker
A man who claims to have an idea for a novel with an amazing, groundbreaking plot, in The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. However, his tutor Jacob Bonner steals the idea years later after learning of his death.
Eve Smith
The author of The Waiting Rooms, which is a dystopia I read in 2020 for a blog tour. In it, people aged over 70 not eligible for healthcare, so it was quite a fearsome concept.
Evelyn Hardcastle
The woman who dies seven times in The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. Detective Aidan Bishop lives through the same day seven times in the bodies of different characters to try and solve her murder.
Evelyn Hugo
A truly formidable former actress from the Golden Age of Hollywood, who relays her life story to magazine journalist Monique, including her seven marriages. An iconic character created by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

The Evidence Against You
A legal thriller by Gillian McAllister which I read in 2019, featuring a woman whose father has recently been released from prison and she is unsure of his guilt.
Ezra
The name of two characters I have read. They are Ellery’s brother in Two Can Keep A Secret, and Felix’s best friend in Felix Ever After by Kacen Callendar.
Let’s Chat
And that’s everything. I wrote that all in one go, so I am a bit exhausted now.
Have you come across any of these books, authors, or characters? Let me know in the comments!
Happy reading 🙂
