Five Books Which Made Me Cry

Hello everyone,

I am back after a short break wherein I spent a wonderful week on holiday in Malta. It is a beautiful country and I had the best time discovering it!

There might be more on that in an upcoming post, but today as I digest the fact that we are somehow already halfway through the year, it is all about the books which made me so emotional that I shed tears over them.

A lot of books make me emotional in some way, but only a handful have actually made me cry. These are in fact some of my favourites books I have ever read, because it is the ones which are the most impactful and the ones you really care about, that are the best.

So yes, here are five books that actually made me cry – and I am happy enough to admit it.

The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I suppose the reasons I cried at this one are how powerful Patroclus is as a narrator and Madeline Miller’s stunning prose. Together, they combine to make the final chapters quite raw, even amid all the atrocities that are occurring as the war reaches its end.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa

For a lot of this book, it just seems adorably whimsical. After all, it is narrated by a cat. But then you find out what is really going on with his owner Satoru and it left me an emotional wreck.

Heart Of The Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan

Sometimes there are just lines in a book which completely resonate with you or strike a particular chord, especially when you are into the story. That was the case with me in Heart Of The Sun Warrior, specifically the relationship between Xingyin and Liwei.

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Kya Clark is a character who, throughout the story, I grew to care for so much that when she is in the courtroom facing accusations of murder, I just could not handle it. The emotions I felt here made this book a real favourite.

The One Hundred Years Of Lenni And Margot by Marianne Cronin

Both main characters made me cry here; at opposite ends of their lives but condemned to impending deaths. Lenni’s dynamic with the hospital chaplain Father Arthur particularly tugged at my heartstrings, while Margot and her marriages were very moving too.

Let’s Chat

And that completes the list! Did any of these books make you cry? Are there any books that made you cry which stand out in particular? Let me know in the comments!

Happy reading :)
